About the artist...
Born in The Netherlands to the Dutch Secretary-General of the Department of Finance, Theo Van Hoytema was a lithographer, illustrator and graphic designer. Having lost his parents at a young age, Theo was raised by his siblings. His eldest sister gave him a taste of the art world by teaching him drawing, and after a short, dissatisfying career in banking he decided to develop his interest in art.

He studied at The Royal Academy of Art and regularly visited the Natural History Museum in Leiden to study the taxidermied animals, which led to his first commissions doing scientific illustrations. After becoming known for his exquisite illustrated calendars, he began to suffer from ill-health and ended up living with a sister in The Hague until the end of his life.
